Poetry: Brokenhearted

By Simangaliso Chirisa

When I closed my eyes, I felt his touch,
When I opened my eyes, I saw nothing but space,
When I looked at my body, I saw his prints,
No matter how hard I tried to get rid of it,
The fear he installed, made it difficult for me,
Brokenhearted I Was.

"Stupid woman!" was his favorite saying,
"I beg you to stop!" was my daily anthem
"I own you!" was his everyday threat,
Nothing about me ever calmed him down,
Cold blooded he had become.

My existence disgusted him,
My vulnerability amazed him,
Pulling my hair became his favorite game,
Scratching my neck, became his everyday habit,
Violence seemed to be his passion,
Cold blooded he had become.

Scared of the world, I couldn't escape,
Afraid to be judged, I couldn't reflect,
Neglected and abandoned I felt,
No matter how hard I tried to ignore,
Reality always knocked the door,
Brokenhearted I Was.
